Grand Tour 2009 - Door County, Wisconsin
Imagine this: 300 miles of scenic shoreline, 5 state parks, 10 lighthouses,
and 12 county parks. This will be the bike ride of the year for those who choose
to participate in the 2009 Grand Tour. Add to this the fellowship of likeminded
individuals (bike riders) and the myriad of other things "The Door" has to offer
and this Grand Tour will be one for the history books. OBS has sponsored a
couple of other trips to Door County, which have had great participation. This
is one of the most beautiful places I
have ever been and I can’t wait to go back! On previous trips we participated in
the world famous Fish Boil, deep water chartered fishing, tours of wineries, art
galleries and some of the best food ever. We will visit Al Johnson’s restaurant
(which has a grass roof complete with goats and Wilsons old-fashioned ice cream
parlor. The Ridges Sanctuary is beautiful and the ferry ride through Death’s
Door to Washington Island is great fun. We will spend a day riding on Washington
Island, which seems to be stuck in the 1950’s. Door County is at the northern
tip of Wisconsin and the Niagara Escarpment makes the riding challenging on the
west side of the island. The rides will include scenic places such as Cave Point
Park and Cana Island Lighthouse. Don’t forget your camera. If you want to bring
your mountain bike, there are trails of varying distances available in 5 of the
county parks
We will stay in two places with loop rides out of there. Sturgeon Bay and
either Sister Bay or
Bailey’s Harbor will be our quarters while we visit the towns of Ephraim, Fish
Creek, and Egg Harbor.
The shape of the Grand Tour will be up to the participants. In the past we have had sag support and snacks/drinks provided each evening with opportunities for group dinners several times along with the Survivors Party. All of that costs extra. Gary can make maps based off of previous trips, which will eliminate the need for a planning trip, which will make expenses less. The down side to that is we won’t know current road conditions and availability of services. There may be some changes upon arrival! Everything will be done by phone. We will have a meeting of those who would like to participate to determine the course of this adventure. Other things to 7 be discussed include finding roommates for singles and sharing rides for those who would like to carpool or caravan to Wisconsin. It is usually a two-day trip each way with 5 days of riding. I will try to make it a pay as you go experience. That said, many of the places we stay or eat at require a group check. I will have more information as the trip forms and I find out how many people plan to go. Hotel rooms and meals are often cheaper with more people and I can negotiate group rates. Reservations need to be made soon for 2009.
Tour Dates may be the last part of May or the end of June. We need to work
around Freewheel and the Bike Ride of Colorado. Let me know what works best for
you. Once again, a group consensus will
prevail.
If you are interested, please send me an e-mail at suzcan@aol.com or call me at 405-354-8412. I will compile a list of those interested to keep updated via e-mail. The e-mail will go only to those interested, not the entire OBS group list. I hope you decide to join us. This is going to be a great trip!
