Stillwater to Guthrie, 45 miles

We left the hotel headed west on Hall of Fame Boulevard which cuts through the middle of Oklahoma State University. It was like old home week to a number of people on the ride who had gone to college there. We rolled along the tree lined streets and past red brick buildings, mostly vacant now that college is out for the year.

The town of Mulhal is the only thing between Stillwater and Guthrie and even though they have gone through an extensive rebuilding since the tornado of May 3, 1999 blew away every building in the town except the old bank, they still don't have a cafe. I set up a water stop in front of the old bank. While there I was visited by the local sheriff who wanted to know what we were up to and several people who couldn't believe that grown people actually rode bicycles and had ridden almost two hunred miles at that point.

Several spouses who didn't go on the tour showed up for the last night which swelled the crowd to something like 34 people. Since there were only three vehicles and no one wanted to get sweaty all over again by riding, it took a certain amount of shuttling people around to get them first to the cemetary and finally to the place for dinner. But at the end of a great tour, everyone is happy and that was just one more fun thing.

We had a story telling session at the boot hill cemetary in Guthrie where several of the more famous lawmen and outlaws are buried. One grave was of special interest. He was claimed to have been the meanest outlaw who ever lived and probably with good reason due to his nickname. He was known as Little Dick West.

Following the trip to the local graveyard, we moved to a downtown restaurant called "Granny Had One" for our survivor's dinner and party. Amanda Reckonwith was introduced as the Morals Director for the tour. Proper recognition was given to those who richly deserved it and perhaps a few who didn't. In appreciation of her outstanding ability as the tour leader, Suzann Cannon was presented with an antique safe deposit box dating to 1902 which was rumored to have come from an actual, daring daylight bank heist. It was claimed to have contained seveal hundred gold Double Eagles at one time but unfortunately, it was empty when she received it. But after all, it's the thought that counts.
